The Newlyn, St Ives and Lamorna Artist Colonies

In the late 19th century, ‘The Glasgow Boys’ and the ‘Newlyn School’ became the most innovative and influential of several colonies of British painters practising the plein-air Naturalism brought to prominence by the young French master Jules Bastien-Lepage. The Irish born and French trained Stanhope Forbes arrived in Newlyn in early 1883, joining forces with the already settled Walter Langley and Thomas Cooper Gotch, to be followed by Frank Bramley, Harold Harvey and Samuel Lamorna Birch. The second generation of Harold and Laura Knight, Alfred Munnings and Dod Proctor arrived in the early 1900’s; all found the rich source of subjects within the fishing port of Newlyn, its fishing community and surrounding landscape, producing truly memorable pictures.
