BERWICK ST JAMES ROYAL WEDDING GARDEN PARTY

Berwick St James celebrated the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton with a hog roast and garden party on Friday 29th April from 2pm onwards.  At a village meeting a group of locals agreed to run a free Garden Party to which all villagers, their families and friends would be invited. A raffle would finance the Hog Roast and Sausages, and those coming would bring salads and puddings. As a street party unfortunately would not be possible we were delighted when Tim and Olivia agreed to let us hold it in their garden.  A marvellous team, with Ken and Tim in the lead with the trailer, collected and set up the marquees and furniture, hung the bunting and flags, on Thursday evening. Then, having watched the Wedding we did the rest of the setting up (with a break to watch the kisses on the balcony). Extra thanks to The Boot Inn for a marquee, and Chris for the lights and music.

A marvellous crowd arrived with a multitude of salads and puddings, and we settled down to a wonderful spread with barbequed sausages and roasted pork, salads and puddings (but not necessarily in that order!) with thanks for everyone’s patience – it gave us more time to enjoy our wine. Thank you to all the hard work by all concerned especially Ken, Charles and Ian.  We enjoyed a very clever and entertaining Royal Quiz, thank you to Sue. The winners were Bill with a wonderful 35 out of 37, with the junior winner Lucy.

The wonderful Raffle almost covered the expenses – with some unused things kept for the fete. The prizes were very generous, and many of us went away winners of lovely prizes. Thank you to Jacky and Roland, for the collection, wrapping, selling of tickets and general organizing. We were so lucky with the weather (although we did have a few heartstopping moments!), and with the venue – it could not have been bettered. More thanks to all who came on Saturday morning to clear up – many hands made light work. I hope we left the garden as if there had never been a party at all. Except in these wonderful photographs and in our memories. There were a few bowls, knives, glasses etc left behind, hopefully they will have been collected from the Dairy House by now!

Finally I must thank Tim and Olivia again for all their hard work, both before and afterwards, I hope they weren’t left with too much work to do!

Nicky.
